The number of insects born each year in a given habitat, or the time interval between drops from a leaking faucet, is more naturally described by a system with discrete time, i.e. a mapping.

Initial measurements of all external and internal causes influencing the development of the system can never be fully determined. Chaos ensures that these current uncertainties will quickly take the system beyond its predictability.

Some large-scale phenomena are predictable, while others are not. For example, the trajectory of a soccer ball is in principle predictable, and every player intuitively takes advantage of this whenever he plays soccer. In contrast, the trajectory of a hot air balloon when the air escapes from it is unpredictable: it tilts and spins erratically, and its flight cannot be foreseen.
This dual behavior is also produced by fluid flow. Under some circumstances, it is laminar—even, stable, and easily predictable. Under other circumstances, the flow becomes turbulent—uneven, unstable, irregular—and difficult to predict.
How can we explain the significant difference between laminar and turbulent flow?
In a turbulent flow, many different independent oscillations (vortices) occur. Although each individual oscillation may be simple, their complex combination results in motion that is impossible to predict.
French mathematician Henri Poincaré noted that unpredictable phenomena that arise "by chance" are more likely to be characteristic of systems where small changes in the present lead to noticeable changes in the future. Let's imagine a stone on top of a hill. By pushing it slightly in one direction or another, we make it roll down completely different paths. Chaotic systems are sensitive to external influences at every point of their movement.

Phase space provides a powerful tool for studying chaotic systems because it allows us to represent their behavior in geometric form. Thus, in the example of a pendulum with friction that eventually comes to rest, its trajectory in phase space comes to a certain point. This is a fixed point. Since it attracts nearby orbits, it is called an attractive fixed point, or attractor. If you give the pendulum a small push, its orbit will return to the fixed point. Any system that eventually comes to rest has a fixed point in phase space. This phenomenon is very general: energy losses due to friction or, for example, viscosity lead to orbits being attracted to a small set of phase space that has a lower dimension. Any such set is called an attractor. Roughly speaking, an attractor corresponds to the steady-state behavior of the system - the one to which it tends.

Some systems do not stop after a long period of time, but cyclically go through a certain sequence of states.
No matter how the pendulum is set in motion, it will eventually end up in the same cycle. Such attractors are called limit cycles.

To find out how a chaotic system evolves from a given initial state, we need to move along an orbit. With this method, the amount of computational work is proportional to the time we want to move along the orbit.

Chaos Theory attractors are fractals: geometric objects that exhibit increasing amounts of detail as they grow larger.
Fractals can have different sizes and orientations in space, but the same geometric shape.
Chaos naturally produces fractals. In order for motion to remain in a finite region, nearby trajectories, although diverging, must eventually curve and pass close to each other. This repeats over and over, producing folds within folds, and so on ad infinitum. As a result, chaotic attractors have a very beautiful microscopic structure.

Two trajectories with close initial conditions diverge exponentially during evolution, so that they pass close to each other only for a very short time. In the case of non-chaotic attractors, the qualitative picture is completely different. For them, close trajectories remain close, small errors remain limited, and the behavior is predictable.

The key to understanding chaotic behavior is provided by a simple stretching and folding procedure in phase space. Exponential divergence is a local phenomenon: since the attractor is finite in size, two orbits on a chaotic attractor cannot diverge exponentially forever. This means that such an attractor must fold within itself. Even though the orbits diverge and follow completely different paths, they must eventually pass close to each other again. As a result, the orbits on the chaotic attractor are shuffled, much like cards in a deck of cards being shuffled. The randomness of chaotic orbits is a result of this shuffling process. The stretching and folding happens over and over again, creating folds within folds, and so on ad infinitum. In other words, a chaotic attractor is a fractal—an object that reveals more and more detail as it gets larger.

The riverbed and the joker in Chaos theory.
Stable attractors look like blocks of ice. The development and change of the attractor usually occurs from the periphery (melting of the edges). The main channel of the attractor is destroyed last.
Due to fluctuations, quantitative changes constantly accumulate in the system, which sooner or later will manifest themselves in a transition to a qualitatively new (often negating previous forms and properties) state. Such a transition usually occurs by a jump at a point in phase space, which is called a joker.

Chaos mixes orbits in phase space in the same way a baker kneads bread dough. To visualize what happens to nearby trajectories on a chaotic attractor, try this experiment. Add a drop of blue food coloring to the dough. Kneading the dough is a combination of two actions: rolling it out (in which case the colored spot expands) and folding it. At first, the spot simply gets longer, then folds form, and this is repeated over and over again. Upon closer inspection, it turns out that the dough consists of many layers of alternating white and blue. After just 20 steps, the original spot has stretched more than 20 million times its original length, and its thickness has shrunk to molecular dimensions. The blue color has completely mixed with the dough. Chaos acts in exactly the same way, only instead of mixing dough, it mixes phase space.

The stretching and folding of a chaotic attractor systematically eliminates the initial information and replaces it with new information: stretching increases small-scale uncertainties, folding brings widely separated trajectories closer together and erases large-scale information. Thus, chaotic attractors act as a kind of pump, “pumping” microscopic fluctuations into a macroscopic manifestation. It is clear from this that there can be no exact solution, no shortcut to predicting the future. Very little time passes, and the uncertainty that arose in the initial measurement covers the entire attractor, depriving us of the possibility of making any predictions: there is no longer any causal connection between the past and the future.

Chaotic systems generate randomness by themselves and do not require external random influences. The random behavior of such systems is not simply due to the amplification of errors and the loss of foresight; it is due to the complex trajectories that are formed by stretching and folding.

The evolution of any individual component of the system is determined by the other components with which it interacts. Thus, information about such components is implicitly contained in the "history" of the individual component. To recreate the "equivalent" phase space, we simply take one component and treat the measured values at fixed delays (e.g., a second ago, two seconds ago, etc.) as if they were new dimensions.
These "delayed" values can be thought of as new coordinates defining a point in a multidimensional phase space. Repeating the procedure with other delay intervals, we obtain many such points. Then, using other techniques, we can check whether these points lie on the chaotic attractor or not. Although this representation is arbitrary in many respects, it turns out that it preserves many important properties of the attractor, which turn out to be independent of the details of the reconstruction.

For Chaos Theory, long-term forecasting is impossible in principle, since due to bifurcation processes, the final state of the system has an infinite number of variants. This must be taken into account when assessing the merits of theories and strategies. Thus, testing a theory becomes a much more subtle procedure, relying more on statistical and geometric properties than on detailed predictions "here and now".
In the case of chaotic dynamic systems, we come to the concept of "forecast horizons", i.e. a certain distance of advancement along the orbit that allows a high probability of confirmation of the forecast.

Chaos is often viewed in terms of the limitations it imposes, such as the lack of predictability. However, nature can use chaos constructively. By amplifying small fluctuations, it may be opening up natural systems to novelty. Perhaps the bird that escaped a predator to avoid capture took advantage of the chaotic regulation of its flight as an element of surprise. Biological evolution requires genetic variation, and chaos produces random changes in structure, thus opening up the possibility of bringing variation under evolutionary control.

Even the process of intellectual progress depends on the emergence of new ideas and the discovery of new ways to connect old ideas. Innate creativity may conceal a chaotic process that selectively amplifies small fluctuations and transforms them into macroscopic coherent states of mind that we experience as thoughts. Sometimes these may be decisions or what is recognized as an exercise of will. In this view, Chaos provides us with a mechanism for the exercise of free will in a world governed by deterministic laws.
